The Ties That Bind Us was a 2024 multimedia art exhibition hosted by Pirate Contemporary Art in Denver. To create graphics for the show, I was inspired by the visual iconography of ties—string, ribbon, chain, bits of fabric—and used physical processes to create the graphic, emphasizing the mixed-media approach we wanted to encourage in the submissions. The resulting graphic’s texture and tactility translated effectively into a black-and-white silhouette, which was used for the wall decal at the gallery entrance alongside the exhibition statement (read below).
The exhibition aims to explore and celebrate the multifaceted concept of liberation through a diverse range of artistic expressions. The Ties that Bind Us investigates how liberation manifests in a world facing the rise of fascism, homelessness, genocide, environmental decay, and other issues that impact our collective freedom. The art submitted includes immersive installations that delve into the theme of liberation, interpreting it through personal, societal, cultural, or historical lenses. What is it that connects us as human beings in the search for liberation? What if the ties that bind us could be the web that connects us and makes us stronger?
